ABSTRACT
In 1928, the Soviet Union’s pavilion at Pressa, an international exhibition of the press in Cologne, Germany, was widely acknowledged as one the “must see” displays of the exhibition. The Soviet Union had multiple goals in participating at Pressa: to promote the validity of the young Bolshevik state, to develop diplomatic contacts, and to promote cultural exchange and trade. The pavilion vividly told of the role of the press in the construction of socialism in the Soviet Union, creating a compelling forward-looking vision of the new society. The bulk of scholarship on the Soviet pavilion has been limited to the art historical examination of the displays and El Lisstizky’s role as the chief artist. My thesis provides an overview of the organization of the pavilion, clarifies the state’s goals, and explores the contribution of various parts of the government engaged in journalism, publishing, trade, and cultural exchange. The abundant archival materials related to the pavilion’s planning have been largely neglected. Seeking to stimulate further scholarship on Pressa, my thesis features a series of annotated archival documents that illuminate key moments and aspects of the pavilion’s organization. It also includes a timeline, biographical notes about key figures and some basic information about the structure and role of organizations, whose representatives participated in planning.
