ABSTRACT
Since the advent of the Hollywood studio system, major American films have demonstrated degrading stereotypes of African Americans following the strengthening of the culture and values of white race superiority. In this paper, I will explore how African Americans were portrayed in films during the Barack Obama administration and after, as well as what trends influenced their representation in popular culture of the 2010s and 2020s. The main question of my thesis is whether blackness is capable of being represented or not. I will be looking at two AfricanAmerican films from Netflix: Spike Lee's Da 5 Bloods and Jeymes Samuel's The Harder They Fall. This study aims to trace the departure from "post–blackness" and "color blindness", which sought to move away from traditional stereotypes, focusing on the diversity and complexity of black experience, and the subsequent returning and merging with Afro-pessimism. Therefore, African-American filmmakers reflect the ideas of Afro-pessimism in their films. Through this lens, they view the continuing effects of slavery, racism and segregation. They disagree with the idea that the election of an African American president and the rhetoric about color blindness both mean that the fight against racism is over and that blacks have achieved equality in US civil society. However, after analyzing the films of the 2020s from Netflix, I come to the conclusion that modern US black cinema is a unique historical case, where black individuals become part of predominantly white narratives, while still preserving their black identity and representation in the media.
